porcelain sheet

A piece of fabric was soaked in liquid clay then hung out to dry to expose draped ridges akin to a topographic map. Chemically stained clay was absorbed into the cotton structure then burnt away leaving a fragile shell of existence representing the destruction of the Aral Sea that lies between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Once the fourth largest lake in the world, in only 40 years this expanse of water has diminished by 80% due to cotton farming.

Dimensions 42 x 28cm
